Reports To

(Associate) Director, Scientific Services

Purpose of the Role

  • Take overall responsibility for team(s) within a scientific group, ensuring strategic and tactical initiatives are implemented to the highest possible standards.
  • Contribute to content delivery across assigned accounts, ensuring the highest standards are met, including senior review of deliverables and content generation as needed and/or depending on project type (e.g. strategic publication plans, gap analyses, scientific platforms and lexicons).
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with clients to develop advocacy and facilitate resolution of difficult issues.
  • Manage a team of line reports and provide mentorship, guidance and support to these individuals in support of their career progression and job satisfaction.
  • Ensure adherence to efficient and effective working practices and processes across assigned teams in adherence with the agency standard operational procedures.
  • Work closely with the client services team to support financial management, strategic planning, organic business growth and generation of new business.
  • Manage overall resource allocation across assigned accounts, assess capacity to maintain target utilization and support the recruitment process for various scientific roles within the assigned teams including the review of candidate writing tests and participating in interviewing and selection.

Line Management and Mentoring

  • Line manage a team of scientific and editorial staff as required, with support from Scientific Agency Leads.
  • Provide ongoing support, mentoring and constructive feedback to team members to aid professional development, job satisfaction and consistent high-quality delivery.
  • Identify areas of growth and recommend appropriate mentoring and training.
  • Provide constructive feedback at regular intervals on work quality, relationships and behaviours.
  • Perform appraisals and objective setting twice yearly.
  • Proactively manage underperformance when required, including identifying areas for improvement and timelines, in partnership with People & Culture.
  • Participate in line manager training and support other line managers as needed.

Project Management and Quality Standards

  • Ensure all projects across assigned teams are delivered to the highest scientific and editorial standards, on time and within budget.
  • Provide senior scientific, editorial, strategic and commercial counsel across therapy areas.
  • Support Scientific Agency Leads in maintaining up-to-date SOPs and workflows.
  • Contribute to overall account strategies, plans and client management, particularly with complex or sensitive issues.
  • Lead liaison, information sharing, meetings, teleconferences and workshops, ensuring actions are captured and followed up.

Team Leadership

  • Model appropriate behaviours across all situations including client leadership, scientific excellence and collaboration.
  • Provide strong leadership and motivation, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, excellence and accountability.
  • Encourage and enable individuals to perform at the highest level.
  • Keep abreast of disease landscape and therapy areas to support strategic communication and organic growth.

Client Leadership

  • Liaise confidently with clients and external experts, inspiring trust and building strong relationships.
  • Proactively challenge client thinking and pursue growth opportunities through scientific and strategic insights.
  • Consistently demonstrate proactive, added-value client service.

Financial Management

  • Support account teams in achieving financial targets; work with client services to prepare accurate scopes of work and budgets.
  • Monitor actual versus budgeted time; ensure timesheets are completed accurately and submitted on schedule.

New Business

  • Identify new business opportunities within existing accounts and collaborate with business/strategy colleagues to maximise growth.
  • Support or lead scientific development of proposals and pitch presentations.
  • Attend pitches to demonstrate depth and breadth of scientific and editorial expertise.

Role Requirements

  • PhD, PharmD, or MD.
  • At least 6 years’ medical communications experience with proven scientific team leadership.
  • Extensive medical writing experience across a wide range of project types and therapy areas.
  • Experience across diverse deliverables, including onsite and client meetings.
  • Understanding of the strategic planning process.
  • Strong presentation and client communication skills.
  • Experience developing and presenting business proposals/pitches (preferred).
  • Clear, high-quality communication skills.
  • Line management, mentoring and reviewing experience within a med comms agency.
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills.
  • Commercial awareness relating to financial management in a medical communications environment.
  • Proficient in required software such as Word and PowerPoint.
